Ambassador Mohammed Mohosin

Mr. Mohammed Mohsin was born in a respected Muslim family in Cumilla on 1 February 1933. He joined the erstwhile Civil Service (Economic) through a competitive examination in January 1956. He served as Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary during the late 1980s as well as Ambassador to several countries in Europe, Africa, and West Asia including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan, Yemen, Somalia, Niger, Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxemburg. He was also the Permanent Representative of the EEC (now EU) in Brussels ( 1973-77) and the Organization of the Islamic Countries(OIC) and its specialized agencies including the Islamic Development Bank(IDB) in Jeddah ( 1981-88), as well as Specialized United Nations agencies in Geneva including UNCTAD and GATT( WTO) earlier in 1068-71. He was a pioneer in establishing diplomatic ties with the UAE as well as other Arab countries including the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He was elected Deputy. Assistant Secretary General of the OIC 57 Nations Inter-Governmental Organization in Jeddah, and served for 2 terms from late 1989 till 1997. During his tenure at the OIC, one of his significant successes was that, after working hard for 5 years, he successfully brokered a Historic Peace Agreement between the Philippines Government and Moro Muslim Rebels( MNLF) in Mindanao region, signed in September 1996. In March 2005 the Phillippines Government honored him by conferring their most prestigious and highest Presidential Award ( the Order of Sikatuna) on him in recognition of his outstanding diplomatic achievements in ushering in the long-awaited process of Peace and Development in the region. Besides his other experiences on similar conflict resolution missions have been in Afghanistan, Bosnia, Somalia, and Nagorno Karabakh. He was also the recipient of a Presidential Award in Pakistan in 1969-70 ( called Order of T.PK) for his outstanding contribution to economic/commercial development especially reopening the historic Silk Route between China and Pakistan through Karakoram Mountain pass. Currently, Mr.Mohsin is serving as a Senior Fellow at the Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies(BIISS).Dhaka. Governor of the University of Asia Pacific (UAP) Dhaka. He is actively associated with various Civil Society activities/ dialogues concerning Islam and the West, Children and Women, Regional Cooperation, Human Rights, Good Governance, and Poverty Alleviation. Earlier he was associated with a Member of a high-level Think Tank called "The Group of Eminent Persons( GEP), set up by the Seven South Asian Heads of State in 1997 with a mandate to develop a vision of the SAARC for the year 2020 and beyond. He studied International Relations with a specialization in International Economics and International Law at the University of Dhaka (1951-53) and again at the London School of Economics and Political Science( LSE), University of London ( 1954-56) for his post-graduation. Presently, he is the Chief Patron of the newly established Think Tank the " Center for Saudi Arabia Studies ( CSAS) in Bangladesh. The "Center for Saudi Arabia Studies" is the first such kind of organization in the history of Bangladesh working on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
